A CD-ROM based e-learning module on Object Oriented Systems Development

Abstract

This is a CD-ROM based e-learning module on “Object Oriented Systems Development” covering the 2nd half of the syllabus (Chapter 10-16).The end users of this module will be the students who are in the 3rd semester of the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Degree Course at the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). This will be much more user friendlier and full of multimedia facilities. Finally the system will be delivered as a CD. Especially because of the user friendliness, the support this system will provide for the students will be very higher compared to the traditional learning modules. This system is implemented using Macromedia Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio Authoring Environment. PowerPoint 2000, Rational Rose 2000, Windows Paint are the other main tools used. In addition two 3rd party free software tools were used as a conversion software for converting PowerPoint presentations to Flash Movies (Roboflash Toolkit 2.0 - Converter for PowerPoint) and for capturing the steps of designing UML diagrams as Video Clips (CaptureWizPro – Version 3.00). At the end of each Chapter there is a Quiz which consists of 5 questions and the user will be able to test his knowledge by answering those questions. A posttest is also being given at the end of the module; therefore the user will be able to test his overall knowledge. If the user thinks he knows the subject well, then he can directly answer the questions in either a Quiz or the Posttest. At the end of each test user will be provided with the marks he obtained. The system is planned to be tested by the undergraduate students at UCSC after completion. Their responses will be taken into consideration and necessary changes will be done before releasing the final version of the system.
