Title: E-learning Module: Data Communication & Networks (Based on BIT Module IT4101)
Authors: JAMES, C.N.
Issue Date: 13-Nov-2013
Abstract: The UCSC (University of Colombo School of Computing) having the most advanced training resources and experience in Sri Lanka in the field of ICT training conducts the Degree of Bachelor of Information Technology (External) - BIT programme. The UCSC conducts examinations leading to the first-ever External Degree in IT in Sri Lanka. The University of Colombo will award the degree. The purpose of this project is to enhance the e-Learning facilities by developing an e-learning Module for Data Communication & Networks (Module IT4101), which is a compulsory subject in Semester 4. The term "e-learning" is used to describe the use of the web and other Internet technologies to enhance the teaching and learning experience. For the range of e-learning opportunities if the technology is used appropriately within a particular course, it can have a tremendous impact on the learners. However, it is important to remember that it isn't the technology that improves the learning but how educators and learners use these technologies. Technology should only be used where it adds value to the students' learning. During the development of the e-learning course, following points were taken into consideration.  how the technology is used to support/supplement a traditional course, or to create a blended or completely online course  how the students' skills were supported, experience and expectations  what existing systems and tools were used and what were acquired  what minimum specification for hardware and software the students will need  what the staff skills or time implications are required  the timeline for the project in terms of achievable milestones  how the project can be evaluated both in-course and post-course. Considering the above, we had a firm foundation for developing and implementing the project and ensured everything is in place to support the students.
