Title: e-Learning system for Mathematics for Computing I for BIT Semester I
Authors: Abeygunawardana, R.A.B.
Issue Date: 11-Nov-2013
Abstract: The objective of this project is to developed an e-learning site for Mathematics for Computing I for BIT semester I students. The overall syllabus of this module is covered in this web material. There are seven main topics and several sub topics in this module and these are discussed using simple explanations and graphics. Every sub topic is explained in a 14’ screen sized page and at the end of every page some examples related to that topic are available. In the example page, the solution and some explanations by describing the way to solve this problem are included. Since this the first mathematics module under the BIT and age and education levels of the students varies widely, simple computational functions are used to explained the mathematical concepts in this material. On the other hand the course coordinator or the Subject Matter Expert (SME) may not be familiar with developing and updating a web site. Therefore, a simple, but powerful tool “Microsoft Front Page” is used to develop web pages. Students can use this site to learn and the coordinator or the SME can use this site to teach Mathematics for Computing I module for all the BIT semester I students. Finally, both users coordinator and students can share their knowledge through this site. Students also can be used this site to evaluate their knowledge by using Quizzes, Tests and Past Papers available in the site. Tests are available at the end of the each of the main topic while quizzes at the end of the sub sections. SME need not be expected to develop or update web pages, since a user-friendly tool was used to develop them. Since every main topic is sub divided into several sub topics and these sub topics are described in one page, it is easy to add new pages and examples to any sub topic. Since, this site does not use much graphics and animations the downloading time is reduced. Therefore, users can use this site for low cost (Telephone charges). And also, due to simple and clear explanations they can understand mathematical concepts very easily. Therefore this site will definitely be very popular and usable.
