Authors: Rathnayake, C.
Issue Date: 8-Nov-2013
Abstract: The endless gusto of human mind for innovation was awarded with most remarkable gift of mankind when they were able to materialize the dream machine called COMPUTER. But soon it was understood that it was only the beginning of more sophisticated yet fascinating journey of experiments and innovation. Researching, analyzing and developing of systems for both classification and simulations of facial expressions thorough the computer is one of such emerging field of study among the computing community. Progress of this arena is gearing up with the backing initiating from the computer hardware segment as markets are flooded with powerful computers that has higher computation powers. This trend narrowed the most disturbance issue the multimedia world faced, the data volume. The dissertation unfolding in upcoming pages portrays an in-depth coverage of designing & implementation of a computer based facial expressions classification system. The most expressive way humans display emotions is through facial expressions. Arguably In neutral conditions the expressions display through face work as natural mirror to the inner feelings of the subjected person. Thus the classification of the facial expressions can determined to be as classification of the mode of an individual. The scope of this project lies with the objective of materializing a facial expression classification system that accepts online data which can also categorized as real time data. However the accomplished fully working system would accept input data formulated though image capturing devices such as web cams or image scanners and detects the facial data for processing. Ultimately the system would classify the mode of expressions posed by the object [human face]. The system would also consist of a powerful noise deduction mechanism that would enhance the face detection capabilities prior to the processing. Apart from the technicality of the system this document also describes some of interesting remarks on human facial expressions and its behavior squeezed through the vigorous survey done on literature in this regards which also done as a part of this project.
