Design & Implementation of a Web Based Application for Monitoring the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Network Sri Lanka Telecom

Abstract

This dissertation comprehensively covers the final project undertaken by me in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MSc in Information Technology of the University of Colombo School of Computing.

As the title of the dissertation specifies, the project concentrates on developing a real time solution to monitor the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). The project was taken up on a pilot basis to explore the feasibility of deploying an in-house developed web based network monitoring tool for monitoring the said network on security and traffic. This dissertation vividly describes the achievements accomplished in fulfilling the requirements of the said target.

The software product in focus as discussed in this dissertation incorporates web interfaces for ease of monitoring the network on intrusions and vulnerabilities for network administration purposes, and presenting historic information on network traffic for management information purposes. The dissertation further presents the invaluable effort taken to use freeware such as ‘Linux’, ‘MySQL’ and ‘PHP4’ for the development of the said application on a test lab setup in the laboratory, Internet Division, Sri Lanka Telecom.

The implementation of the application in its totality will be put into the real production environment after the new Network Operating Centre (NOC) has been in place in early 2005, after thorough testing, and incorporation of all features necessary to monitor the vast complexities of the VoIP network of SLT. This project lays the groundwork for achieving this task.
