Title: Web Based MIS for Staff Administration of Advanced Technological Institute Dehiwala

Abstract: The objective of this project is to implement a Web Based Management Information System for Advanced Technological Institute, Dehiwala to handle Leave, Attendance, Personal Files of the staff and to Employee Registration. In addition employees can request for leave online, and check the status of the approval. All the Employees have the privilege to view his/her own personal details. Administrator is able to view details of all the other staff, handle attendance, leave and user profile. At present the authorized administrative officers carry out the above-mentioned functionalities manually. As per the discussion with the Director of the Institute, an automated system would reduce the paper works and enhance the efficiency and the effectiveness of the staff. The solution will be built on 3-tier architecture, using technologies MySQL and PHP. The development methodology would be Rational Unified Process (RUP) used with Evolutionary Prototyping. The system is programmed to run on Apache Web Server on Windows platform. In addition to the investigation done prior to the proposal submission, I planned and executed a structured requirement gathering based on interviews and observations. The survey enabled the gathering of functional, non-functional and interface requirements. The findings of this survey enabled me to refine and elaborate the requirements forming the base for the Software Requirement Specification (SRS). The initial design is expressed in Unified Modeling Language (UML) in terms of class diagrams, state diagrams and interaction diagrams for each of the modules. This initial design will be the stepping-stone to the detailed design that is to precede the development of the system. By considering the user requirements with regard to fact-finding methods, I accepted the challenge of developing a Web Based Automated System for the Advanced Technological Institute to handle the said requirements. The system is browser based, where it comprises of interfaces to facilitate input and retrieval of records. Only authorized personnel are permitted to carry out input, update and delete records. Considering attendance handling, due to some constraints among the minor staff I have arrived at a decision an authorized officer will feed the system with attendance data. The other two facilities of leave handling and personal file handling cannot be given the option to handle to the staff under any circumstances. A logical data model is presented as an ER diagram as well as a physical data model. Testing methods used here are included. User interfaces are attached with descriptions. Conclusions on the analysis and the design of the system are carried at finally.
