Issue Date: 3-Oct-2013
Abstract: With the rapid growth of smartphones and other hand held devices life has become easy for people. With a single touch we can get huge amount of valuable information. Almost all the modern day smartphones are equipped with GPS navigation units which provide extra functionalities to the users such as current location identification, finding the route from one location to another etc. These functionalities are helped by satellite based navigation systems and maps which have become very popular for information retrieval. Maps used in GPS are highly used in various areas such as tracking systems, vehicle navigation systems etc. Unfortunately the main problem with current maps is that those are not updated. Therefore the fullest advantage of using a navigation system cannot be achieved by using these maps. In this project, we have designed an automatic map update system which is based on the active participation of a user community. The main focus is given to the development of an algorithm which determines the most optimal route for a given path since the same track can be uploaded by more than one user (at different times). The ultimate result will be a map with more updated route details compared to other available maps like Google Map, OSM and Yahoo Map etc. The solution is developed on top of the MapServer platform which is an open source development environment for publishing spatial data. An Android application which maintains a map of the country with up to-date information has also been created. This map will gradually grow to a complete map with the involvement of the application user community. This application is currently developed to be able to handle map information within Sri Lanka. It can be expanded to support processing of map information anywhere in the world.
