A Web based MIS for Student Registration of Advanced Technological Institute Dehiwala

Abstract

This web based Management Information System is being developed as an individual project done by me (the student Reg no MSc/IT/2004/018 of the Msc in IT 2nd batch of the university of Colombo school of computing) in fulfillment of my 3rd semester project. Proposed System is designed for Advanced Technological Institute (ATI), Dehiwala which belongs to Sri Lanka Institute of advanced Technological Education (SLIATE).

There are various institutes which govern under private or public conduct courses to the students and they have attractive systems to maintain the student related activities. So to compete with others who maintain such system, the ATI also should have a good system to provide a better service which including online applying process and downloading application forms, registering process, view attendance, get the results and maintain information about courses, subjects and lecturers etc…

The system is not only for students, actually it will be helpful to the staff in various ways who conducts all processes manually. Currently they face lot of difficulties such as delay of giving information to students, wasting time to searching information and preparing reports according to various requirements.

A primary objective of this project is developing a web based MIS for automate all student activities at ATI which included the following functionalities:

• Online student registration • Issuing Examination Results • Calculations of Attendance • Maintain information about o Registered students o Lecturers o Subjects o Courses • Generation Reports of any type. This comprehensive web based MIS provides the solutions to the growing IT needs of Advanced Technological Institute. In this system we considered Dehiwala ATI as the main entity of the system, since currently most of the above functions are done by manually which makes more difficulties for the staff.

First of all a clear idea about the organization was achieved in order to identify the potential for such a project. A feasibility study was carried out and it was identified that the project could be conducted in the given time frame with available resources. As the project was approved, the current system was analyzed by conducting interviews with relevant people and referring the documents the required details were acquired. With the functions identified in the previous stages in hand the required system design was design, using Object OOAD methodology. The case tool Rational Rose was used for designing purposes. The solution will be built on 2-tier architecture, using technologies MySQL and PHP. The system is programmed to run on Apache web server on windows platform.

Finally the database was created and prototype was developed using Macromedia Dream Weaver MX for front end and PHP, MySQL for back end, covering key areas of the system. New system overcomes the drawbacks of the previous manual system. This document sets out the interim project report for a web based MIS for the Advanced Technological Institute students who take courses offered from ATI.
