Title: Agricultural Production Management System
Authors: Kalingamudali, M.L.
Issue Date: 30-Oct-2013
Abstract: Sri Lanka is known for flourishing agricultural producers in the south East Asia and also known as the granary of Asia. The development of agro industry is hindered due to non-utilization of information systems even though the 60% of our work force takes part in this noble profession. Farmers used to invest on farming with bank loans to obtain a reasonable harvest but face difficulties in obtaining a reasonable price. The reality is they do not get the money already invested on cultivation due to over supply at the time of reaping the harvest and farmers who cannot stand the disaster commit suicide. There are a number of institutions carrying out individual projects to overcome this problem but farmers are not benefited due to poor coordination, inaccessibility, language barrier and delayed delivery of data. The solution for the problem is a dynamic web based information system and in this project author’s objective is to design an information system and develop a prototype. With the proposed system, farming community can gather information related to crops, patterns of cultivation, selection system to find the most suitable crop based on the area, availability of water, present cultivation, pest attacks based on area and expected yield and other related information. Also system will indicate list of producers with their contact information, who gather their harvest monthly basis. This will expose farming community to new buyers in turn farmers can make better profits. Also consumers will be benefited with better pricing and freshness available with the produce. System will be web based offering services to entire farming community and also to consumers. Since the project is for the entire population of Sri Lanka, solution will address the problems due to language barriers. Vishwa Ghnana Kendra (VGK), is planed to operate in rural areas under E-SriLanka initiative as the computer resource center for Computer illiterate poor farmers to access the web. The prototype is designed with Sinhala and English language user interfaces and in completing the final implementation, author wishes to stress the importance of Tamil language facility.
