Title: Service Oriented Framework for GIS - The Client
Authors: Chandrasekara, S.K.K.L.S.
Issue Date: 29-Oct-2013
Abstract: With the increase of internet, Geographical Information System (GIS) becomes a widely used powerful tool. The Service Oriented Architecture standalone provides loose coupling of services that can be integrated or used by even if their respective client sys- tems are substantially di®erent. Therefore it is clear that, SOA can be use with GISs to add new value added services by integrating di®erent functionality provided by di®erent vendors. But SOA is not widely used with GIS. Although there are few GISs based on SOA, most of them are proprietary, not customizable and very expensive. Furthermore these GISs have limitations and those are capable in utilizing only the products belongs to corresponding organizations. Another issue is these GISs are not very much user friendly because these systems are designed for technical experts rather than common users. Therefore it is not feasible to use these available services. We can solve this problem by designing a Service Oriented customizable standard Framework to Manipulate GIS data. The standards are based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web standards for Geographical Information Systems. In order to implement and prove this, we need to have a complete system with a map server and client. But in this project, our main objective is to design a front-end for the service oriented customizable framework system. This system should provide usual GIS functionality to the user such as map viewing and layer selection. The front end is based on OGS web standards which is pluggable into any back-end system, and it is compatible with OCG web standards. Front-End will also provide facilities to get geographical information around a speci¯ed location through Multimedia Message Service (MMS).
