Web Based Information System for Department of Physical Education, University of Kelaniya.

Abstract

The Department of Physical Education (DPE), University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka provides a wide range of Sports and Recreation programmes for the benefit of students. 15 games for girls and another 20 games for boys are organized annually. The best performed players are awarded the “University Sport Colours” at the end of the academic year. According to the players’ attendance for practices and other events, and their performance in matches, they earn points. On the basis of the points that the players earned, “University Sport Colours” was awarded to them. Winners of the colours award were selected through a system based on Microsoft Excel. There were many loop points in this system.

The objective of this project was to implement a convenient and effective Web based information system for the benefit of the staff and the players in order to overcome the shortcomings in the existing system. The implemented system has more features. There is a facility to define many user types such as the player, the data entry operators, the staff and the administrator. Details such as attendance of fitness test, coaching camp, education segment, road race, sport practices and points for performance can also be included in to the system. Another facility has been given to user to define members of pool, members of team, captains and vice captains. Finally, with the help of this system, reports of colours award winners can be easily generated.

Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been used to design the system and Dreamweaver was used to develop the system. The development language was PHP. Java Script was used to validation as client side scripting. WAMP 2.0 has facilitated to install Apache sever and MySQL server. They are essential required to run the web based system and the database.

The testing process of the complete system was successful done by staff of DPE. Questionnaires were administrated to players and members of DPE and their feedback has been gathered. Feedback of the survey revealed the system was accurate and useful. All the required functionalities of the process of selection of winners of colours award has been computerized through developed system. The system was implemented to select sports colours award winners. Entire process was made transparent to all stakeholders. Real set of data were entered into the system and finally sports colours award winners were selected for the academic year 2010/2011, University of Kelaniya.
