Authors: Withanage, W.D.A.P.
Issue Date: 25-Oct-2013
Abstract: Today, any business organization depends on their IT infrastructure to deliver better services than their competitors. To reach up to this level, they invest a considerable amount of money and time to research and implement faster and sophisticated IT services to their customers and end users. Some services like email, calendar sharing, video conferencing, directory services have become essential services in a computer network to a competitive business organization. As the end users depend on these IT systems and services more and more, unavailability of these systems due to network or system failures may cause a major loss in their business especially in terms of money, reputation and customer relationship. This project presents a method to implement a proactive mechanism to trap these failures and inform the same to relevant IT personnel as soon as it happens in the network with out involving any IT staff. Further, the developed system (NMS) can be used for capacity planning and performance upgrades of business sensitive areas of the network by looking at the various kind of reports. This project is mainly focused on using widely available open source tools to implement such a network monitoring system while optimizing hardware resources. Finally it empowers the IT professionals by introducing the power of open source tools which can be used to improve the service standards of IT in developing countries.
