Authors: Silva, N.De.
Issue Date: 23-Oct-2013
Abstract: Brown and Company is a company that was established in 1875 and has been in the Sri Lankan market for over one hundred years and has been dealing in various sectors of the market such as Agriculture, Battery, Power tools, Office Automation etc. The Company has a divisional structure and Battery is one of the most profitable units in the company and EXIDE is one of the most powerful brands the company has. There are around 16,000 batteries that are distributed for a month and most of these sales are been done by the dealers around the country so that the company does not have a track of the EXIDE battery customers in the country as well as the actual sales done at a dealer point. From the Companies point of view the sales transaction is completed at the time the battery is sold to the dealer and there is only a manual track on the warranty of these batteries. In this project an attempt is made to capture the secondary sales made through a dealer to the end customer using a web based solution developed with the aid of open source technologies such as MYSQL for database, Joomla as the CMS component, Superfish was used on top of Joomla as a suckerfish like dropdown menu, jQuery as a scripting language to retrieve data, Highcharts was used to develop interactive charts, Akaeeba was used as a backup component and PHP. Another major objective of this project is to capture the actual sales made at the dealer location and to keep track of the actual stocks at that location on a real time basis. User requirements were gathered from the existing users and a search was made to find a similar solution off the shelf for a reasonable budget and meeting the requirements of the company. Since this was failed the decision was to make a tailor made solution for calculating warranty. After analyzing the user requirements, designing, testing and implementing the proposed solution will result in maintaining the customer warranty, supplier warranty, actual dealer sales and stock management in a more efficient and accurate manner resulting in improved productivity, operational efficiency and increase in profits of the company. Evaluation by the prospective users and a self- evaluation were done after the implementation stage of the project and it was concluded that the users are satisfied with the features provided in the system.
