Issue Date: 1-Oct-2013
Abstract: This project dissertation discusses the importance of having, an automated system to continuously monitoring the vehicles, that are using the expressway. It discusses how such a system would reduce traffic rule violations and increase the safety on the expressway. In addition the document also discuses similar applications implemented and proposed in other countries, mainly in US and in Europe. The report also provides a brief introduction to researches that has taken place with relevance to traffic monitoring. Furthermore the project dissertation introduces a solution based on GPS data gathered from a GPS enabled mobile devices, which are collected through a web service, and taken in to a centralized processing system. The proposed solution is capable of processing the gathered data and providing real time system monitoring which will highlight potentially dangerous situations and visual implications to monitor live traffic from a control room. For future use, the gathered GPS location data are archived and made available for using for various data analysis, data mining and simulation operations. In addition to above content, project dissertation consists of details of requirement analysis, design and implementation carried out during each of these stages of the project. Design aspect consists of Use Case diagrams, Class diagrams and sequence diagrams to help to understand the system. Last few chapters are dedicated to evaluate the implementation of the proposed project, its short comings and possible future improvements.
