Issue Date: 23-Oct-2013
Abstract: An attempt is made to give a suitable solution for the medical center, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna through the project. The proposed system would cover the activities related to medical center with some advanced options. Currently the medical center of Faculty of Agriculture has one medical officer and a nurse. All works that run using paper based system and all record keeping is done by the nurse. A medical record book is used to write prescriptions and other relevant medical data of students and there is no such a record book for the staff members. At the end of the day, nurse needs to update the books of drugs according to the issues of the drug at the particular date. It is difficult to trace drug information, patient history information and because it is a time consuming task and sometimes relevant data are not available in the medical centre. It is difficult to generate administration reports for clinical decision making because information are difficult to collect from various registers. As a solution for these problems, the new system is proposed. The new system consist mainly three components; patients‟ record management system, handling of special care patients and pharmacy management system. The system handles all the necessary day today activities in the medical centre. Rapid application development methodology is used to develop the new system along with PHP and MySQL database. The new software is developed using the Open EMR which is also an open source patient management system. After the system development and testing of the new system user acceptance test and user evaluation is done to identify whether the new system will meet the client‟s objectives. The staff of the medical center greatly appreciated the work that I have done so far and they suggested me some options which they need to incorporate with the new system. According to their request, necessary changes were done to the system and new components were added to the system. It is said that the information system for medical centre, Faculty of Agriculture is more efficient, effective and user friendly software. At the end, it would be better if the alerts for special care patient and drugs which have expiry less than 3 months will display using popups and add a separate module for the Dental unit as recommended as future works for this project.
