The World Mosquito Program (WMP) is a not-for-profit initiative that exists to protect the global community from mosquito-borne diseases. WMP uses safe and natural bacteria called “Wolbachia” to prevent the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever. Currently, WMP operates one of its sites in Sri Lanka by covering two pilot Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas such as Colombo and Nugegoda. The present field planning and field monitoring operations are handled by the use of partially computerized system which has given rise to many problems and is very time consuming and proven to be very ineffective. As a solution, WMP has decided to converge on an information technology solution in order to develop a comprehensive computerized system which facilitates various needs and expectations of the diverse stakeholders of the system. The proposed field planning and monitoring system is expected to cover almost all the operations and processes related to field planning and monitoring of the organization including spatial data management, field planning management, field activities management, field incidents management, mosquito diagnostic management, screening results management, bio-banking exports management and reports generation. The proposed field planning and monitoring system consists of mobile application and a web based application. The proposed system is developed in accordance to object oriented techniques employing various UML diagrams from modelling the system and adhering to the MVC architecture. Meanwhile, the system is developed according to RUP framework. Android Studio is used as the integrated development environment to develop the proposed mobile application by targeting Android platform. Also, Java is used as the programming language inside Android Studio for the development of proposed mobile application. XAMPP web server solution stack is used to develop the proposed system utilizing Apache as the web server. Codeigniter is used as the server-side framework and JavaScript is used as the client-side programming language to build the web application while MySQL is used for handling the centralized database. Data synchronization between mobile application and remote MySQL database is done using web based application program interfaces. Geographic Information Systems technologies have been applied in the system using software development kits and application program interfaces. Google Maps SDK for Android has been used in mobile application and LeafletJs API has been used in web application to apply Geographic Information Systems Technologies in the system. Ultimately, the developed system is thoroughly tested using a comprehensive testing procedure and evaluated to determine whether the system and user requirements are accomplished. Therefore, it can be understood that the developed system confirms to its specification whilst providing the intended functionality and anticipated outcome.en_US
