Title: Virtual Learning Environment to facilitate and manage BIT final year individual projects

Abstract: Final year individual project plays a major role in the BIT (Bachelor of Information Technology) which is an external online degree program. This gives students a great opportunity to practice the knowledge acquired during prior academic years, as well as getting used to the different routines that are part of the professional world. BIT degree program undertakes a large amount of students’ individual projects every year but the numbers of students who pass the final year individual projects are very few. It is very hard to find the exact reason for this since all the project activities done by the students (except the submissions made for the evaluation) and the guidance that students get from the supervisors, are out of control of Project Examination Board (PEB). As required by PEB, the students themselves select a project from a work place or an organization and, find the supervisors who are outsiders having expected qualification to supervise the project. So there should be a platform to make all the stakeholders to manage their project activities in a supervised environment. The current Virtual Learning Environment has been set up with an online course to manage the BIT final year project, but it didn't give a significant effect on the pass rate of the students and could not track the progress of them correctly. In this dissertation, an attempt is made to build an online infrastructure to automate the process of BIT final individual project in such a way that it can make the project coordinators to coordinate and facilitate the project activities, the supervisors to supervise their students' project activities, and the students to manage their project activities effectively in a collaborative and interactive environment. As a solution to this problem, it was decided to create a core module named as "Project" for Moodle based VLE. This can provide a good platform for students to get the right consultancy from the supervisor, academic staff and other students in right time and to get used to the different routines that are part of the professional world. As well as it can provide a platform for project coordinators to monitor students’ progress and make future decision effectively. The proposed "Project" module can act as an interactive project management system as well as a project based learning environment.
