|Title:||LAN Activity Monitor|
|Abstract:||Information networks are increasingly becoming critical for successful business operation. Irrespective of the scale of the business, occurrence of a system failure would lead to a loss in communication between customers and employees, limiting accessibility to critical information and loss of basic operational tools such as email and print services. This results in a loss of productivity, which contributes, to revenue loss and ultimately lower bottom line performance. Effective management of this system is facilitated by the use of network monitoring software tools that provide real-time and historical data pertaining to user activity and bandwidth needs. This aids in developing frameworks for the proper operation of the system thereby helping to reduce network outages and allow businesses to operate more fluently while cutting costs, and preventing revenue loss. Requirements from a network monitoring software tool vary from company to company. In general, majority of Sri Lankan organizations and companies fall within small and medium scale categories. Most have network infrastructure with Internet connectivity. However, the common problem is they cannot afford to employ highly skilled network administrative or system administrative personnel. Typically, this function is cared for by a typical with some knowledge in IT. Nevertheless, when it comes to rectifying network issues they experience difficulty. However, hundreds of network monitoring tools are available in the web. Most of them require high level IT knowledge by users. In addition, they produce comprehensive and complicated reports and outputs, which do not make any sense to average computer users. Proposed software tool is intended to be deployed in organizations of above-mentioned small and medium scale categories. Initially “LAN Activity Monitor” was designed as a typical network monitoring tool, which provides some additional features required by organizations. However, after the survey, it was decided to re-design the LAN Activity monitor to serve non-technical users responsible for IT infrastructure in small and medium scale organizations. Thus, the “LAN Activity Monitor” was conceptualized and designed to overcome such situations.|
