Automated Class @ Exam Schedule Generating System for Cinec Campus

Abstract

Construction of time tables and managing resources in an effective and efficient manner is very crucial activity for any organisation. Normally it consumes a lot of time of the administrative staff who are engaging in the process. Especially, in a university environment it is essential to have a proper mechanism to generate accurate time tables which could maximize the utilization of university resources. CINEC Timetable Management System (CTMS) was originally designed to overcome the difficulties faced by the administrative staff, lecturers and the students in terms of preparation, resource allocation and resolution of conflicts. CTMS is a web based system which is capable to generate master time tables for different departments, master exam time table, semester time tables, individual time tables for lecturers and time tables for students groups (batches). The concept of Genetic Algorithms (GA) has been used to generate the time tables. This documentation attempts to describe the stages of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to present the every step of the development process of CTMS with appropriate diagrams, illustrations where necessary. This system was developed in Microsoft Windows 7 environment with use of open source technologies such as Apache, PHP and MySql. Windows 7 is an operating system developed by Microsoft cooperation for personal computers. It has several newly added features like speech and hand writing recognition and support for additional file formats. CTMS was developed in a computer installed Windows 7. Apache was installed an used as the web server for the development of CTMS. PHP was used as the server side scripting language to develop the system. The backend was developed using MySQL.
