Abstract: Budget taxis are popular among all Sri Lankans as an alternative mode of transport whenever public transport is unavailable or at special occasions. There are several budget taxi companies providing services in Sri Lanka at present. Most of them have manual systems or partly automated systems. Usually, in many cases, although the location reporting is automated, there is no system to automate the other operations such as cash flow management, booking and dispatching management and monitoring customer feedback. This will lead to duplication of data, inconsistencies and inefficiency of operations and increased operational expenses which will lead to thin profit margins for the company. The objective was to automate several manual processes of the organization, using cutting edge technology, in order to make the routine operations more efficient. A comprehensive web based information system was implemented and deployed after analyzing customer requirements and the system has been able to address most of the operational issues in the business. The system has simplified most of the processes in the organization and has introduced novel concepts such as location based dispatching and customer feedback handling. The system was developed using the incremental development model as the life cycle model since the requirements were certain and the system needed to be delivered in several versions. The system was designed using the object oriented design and many existing technological components were used where appropriate. The result was a web based robust and efficient information system capable of handling the routine operations of the organization. It is anticipated that the new system will facilitate organizational growth and will be able to attract more customers in the future.
