Abstract: The Online Hospital Information System (OHIS) for the Wellawatta Medical Clinic aims at improving the overall quality of the hospital staff and the service offered to its patients. Out of the patients who are visiting the hospital daily, a majority are low and middle income earners while the crowd includes patients with long term as well as short term illnesses who are seeking specialized consultation and treatments from medical experts. At present patients can channel a Doctor at the Medical Clinic hospital and make payments with their credit cards at the medical reception. The system will facilitate ‘e-channeling’, which is a very user friendly and a popular feature in any web based channeling system which enables the patients to make appointments with the consultants and settle payments from the counter itself. The current business process requires several files to be maintained for the purpose of record keeping while the records should be written one by one. Hence the process of record keeping as well as that of retrieving a particular record takes a long time which makes the processes inefficient. In the system if the patient is a new user he/she will have to register into the system while an existing user will have to login with the credentials in order to have access to search and channel a doctor according to the availability of the doctor. The patient also has the privilege of cancelling the appointment while e-mail notifications are sent, when the patient makes and cancels an appointment. The payments are displayed by default and are generated through the database. The doctors also are given the access of updating their personal profiles. Apart from that, the system also facilitates the generation of a report of the patient’s history which will be generated by the admin, so that the doctor can view the patient’s history without any delay. Thus the time taken to treat a patient will be reduced and efficient, accurate and improved service could be provided to the patients. This process is applicable for medical and lab test reports as well. The system was developed using YII Framework and MySQL database.
