Development of Smart Dashboard & Knowledgebase

Abstract

Efficient internal and external processes contribute much towards the growth and success of any organization. The efficiency and effectiveness is very much higher when it comes to an Education Center. Students and Lecturers of ABC University of Sri Lanka faces a similar issue when it comes to gathering information for their studies, assignments and keeping themselves updates with the campus events as there is no central location or database which they could refer to. In addition, collecting and analyzing vast quantities of data can be a tedious process for both parties. Lack of availability of data in the right form at the right time can result in a delay in a decision that may need to be made related to that data. The main objective of the project is to develop a knowledge base and a smart notice board for the students to reduce the time wasting around the campus notice boards and libraries and to deliver the details in the notices to their phones in a simple SMS. The study focused on understanding the various requirements of the students of all the faculties in ABC University and developing the Smart dashboard and the knowledgebase accordingly. In this new system many new technological features are included such as; Smart Dictionary (a knowledge base), Know your Status (students to check their exam results), Print shop (allows users to print their documents without waiting in the que at campus printing station), Details of the Lecturers, Live lectures online, times tables and Smart forums where students and lecturers are allowed to discuss their subject matters online as a group discussion. In order to develop the above features in the system, technologies such as HTML 5 / CSS 3, .NET 4.5, SQL Server 2014, Visual Studio 2013, Bootstrap, Three JS and X3D were used. In addition, SMART Dictionary feature was developed further to add more value to this system. Therefore it consists of detailed descriptions, pronunciations of words, relevant images, videos, research papers & articles of each word/phrase and 3D views. The project dealt with conducting interviews, and surveys with students and lecturers in same university.
