Abstract: University of Colombo is a leading University in Sri Lanka and the Examinations Branch is the heart of the University as they process all examinations related works. At present the Examinations Branch of the University of Colombo has been processing the examination results manually for the Bachelor of Arts degree programme as there is no proper computation system available. The manual system is consuming more time and associated with various the undesirable problems. The Examination Branch is in need to seek a way of automating the system for effective results processing operations. After considering all functional requirements, this project aims to solve the current problem by introducing a computerized management system to examinations branch called “Student Management System” as an alternative for traditional present paper work system. This alternative will be quick, accurate and more efficient and well organized system. The entire system divides into several sub systems, namely Create a Batch, Enter Student Information, Create an Examination, Add or Edit Courses, Academic Registration, Exam Registration, Exam hall allocation, Examination Marks Processing and Releasing Exam Results. Calculating grades, generating results, high security, and administration control and generating numerous management reports are some features in this particular Management System. The System was developed according to the three-tier architecture and also Object Oriented techniques were employed. Unified Modeling Language was used in the analysis and design stages of the project. Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 programming language and SQL Server 2000 relational database management system were used to develop this software. The software was implemented at client office on a trial basis. Performances of these trial runs were proved to be successful and all the users have accepted it as a viable solution suitable for full implementation.
