Title: Server Infrastructure Monitoring System for Clouds – Cloud Checker
Authors: Siriwardana, T.C.A.
Issue Date: 26-Nov-2015
Abstract: Most of the organizations today, tend to move into cloud solutions where they are eligible to move their services and applications to cloud infrastructure and they only need to pay for what they use from the cloud service provider. Even though the infrastructure cost is reduced by the mechanism, monitoring and maintenance involves more costs with needing specialized network and server infrastructure teams and special tools to monitor the environment. Some of the commercial tools provided by the cloud service providers are very expensive while the open source tools are very hard to configure without having a team with special knowledge on the products. So this might be a tedious task for a small scale growing organization to handle since the cost is still high. In order to overcome the drawbacks that have mentioned above, a free solution (cloud checker) is going to be introduced which provides all the features that other monitoring tools provide and it should be very easy to configure and control. On the other hand this project is carried out to provide these small organizations a monitoring system for their cloud based infrastructure. As the final outcome of this project you can have a cost effective, reliable, user friendly tool and furthermore it will be able to manage by a person who has an average IT knowledge. Apart from providing cloud server infrastructure monitoring for small business organizations, this product will also provide stats about servers with the aid of graphs. Whenever there is an issue, monitoring server will captured all the information such as load average, up time, and alert the user. Report generating feature is one that is lacking in most projects; however this is available in the Cloud Checker. Cloud Checker is most suitable for users who prefer to outsource the task of developing the application. They can simply create a cloud instance to host the application and use Cloud Checker to monitor the cloud instance. Compared to other similar products, Cloud Checker contains all the necessary server infrastructure monitoring and reporting features with much simpler configurations which are easier to manage.
