Authors: Pathmanathan, A.
Issue Date: 2-Jul-2015
Abstract: School Management System (SMS) was developed for Fathima Muslim Ladies College (FMLC) which is a well known and leading School in Sri Lanka. FMLC is the oldest Muslim Educational Institution for girls in the Western Province established more than eighty years back as Fathima Girls’ English School. Its administration was under the purview of Sri Lanka Muslim Education Society. The performance of FMLC throughout the last decade has been satisfactory. As a result many students have gained entrance to Universities, Colleges of Education, to Technical Colleges and to Foreign Universities. Many are holding better job positions in both the government and private sector organizations. This system was developed to facilitate achieving its vision as most of them are using Management Information in day –to-day operations to make quality, timely and accurate decisions. The existing manual system had many failures and limitation such as access to student information was a time consuming activity and maintainability of records and their accuracy, inability to track student performance, resources scheduling was done manually and no proper system to manage the Exams were the major concerns. SMS will be capable of addressing all the issues identified above to manage information effectively and it will empower the client to analyze information in many perspectives. Student registration handling, Student Exam handling, Student performance evaluation, Maintain student attendance, Handling school Events and generating of customized reports under each module are covered by SMS. This is a standalone System which adapted the 3-tier architecture with object oriented environment. The system is being developed using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 as the IDE and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 as the database server. RAD is used as the software development methodology for the proposed system. All coding is written in C#.net and reports are generated by Crystal report generator in .NET Framework. Furthermore, to draw UML diagrams for system descriptions, Online software called ‘Creatly’ was selected.
