Title: Student Information Management System Integrated with an Online Student Corner for Panota Institute of Information Technology

Abstract: The Student Information Management System (SIMS) is a single system for Panota Institute of Information Technology (Pvt) Ltd, which will provide an institute-wide information facility to assist the Institute to attain its strategic aims, facilitates institute-wide management processes, supports better automation of daily procedures carried out by the institute, reduces reliance on paper based forms, elimination of duplication of effort and data in different areas of the institute?s daily activities. SIMS will be integrated with an online Student Corner to interact with the public. The project will highlight how the quality, efficiency, robustness and reliance of SIMS shapes Panota?s dynamic environment to increase their effectiveness. PIIT is an emerging IT firm in Sri Lanka, which was established in 2010. They have been engaged in local and foreign companies in the field of Information Technology, Software Development, and mainly committed in providing IT Education in Sri Lanka. With the expansion and the rapid growth of the company, the number of students and staff being increased, the management is in need of an approach to administer their daily activities as well as monitor the progress of their students. The need to assist with all administration, management, finance and activities associated with learning is strongly stressed by the customer. Thus, the solution deemed for the development of a fully automated SIMS. The system would assist the management of PIIT with a better visibility and control over their administrative and management processes as well as to manage students, lecturers, courses and all the processes associated with running the institute efficiently. The system has adapted Model View Controller (MVC) architecture and object oriented (OO) concepts. Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the modeling language used to illustrate visual modes of the system being developed. C#.net will be the main programming language for the SIMS whilst Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) for the Student Corner and adopts Yii framework. Microsoft SQL Server is used as the centralized database and Apache server to run Student Corner. Hence, Microsoft Technology, system runs on Windows environments.
