Student and Exam Management System for Faculty of Arts

Abstract

As one of the leading universities in Sri Lanka, University of Colombo has been providing higher education to Sri Lankan youth for many years and as a part of this university, faculty of arts has the highest student registration count in a year. It also provide the students a variety of courses in many fields such as political science, geography, demography, history etc. and large number of students gets enrolled in these courses for a year. Therefore, the management of the faculty has to keep track of these students records in order to carry out day to day functions properly. Considering the amount of data that they handled, it is a very wise decision which was taken to computerize their business processes that could result in providing more efficient and effective service to student and staff of the faculty. This web based Student Management System is a helpful tool in overcoming their problems having with the manual system. This software solution is developed in covering all of the student administrative parts of the faculty including student registration, examination management, course handling etc. Accordingly all the above functions can be processed using this solution. This system is developed using a procedural software development model and the main language used in development this system is PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (php) which is a server-side scripting language designed for web development. However it is very often used as a general programming language for developing web based applications such as Facebook . Apachi web server is used to host this system while it is using Mysql as the database management system which used to store and manage the relevant data. The reason for developing this as a web based system is because most of the processing s done on the server side and it has the added advantage of running almost on all operating systems. The web based student management system has been designed and developed according to the user s system requirements to assist them in their student registration and examination related tasks while providing facilities to the students to interact with the system.
