Authors: Sudasinghe, A.K.
Issue Date: 16-May-2015
Abstract: The Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA) of the University of Colombo is a government institute with the principal objective of producing workers with improved knowledge, or converting them into knowledge-workers . The IHRA produces around 100 graduates of Bachelor of Labor Education (BLE Degree) annually and through its process of educating produced close to 800 undergraduates during the past few years. Administrative processes such as student, personal data and enrolment management, admission handling, tracking achievements and progress, transcript generation, statistical report generation and managing payment collection were managed with the manual file system. Because of the manual file system administration was facing problems related to such a system like data redundancy, inconsistency and less accuracy, unavailability of information and reports on time. Owing to these problems administrative processes could not be carried out effectively and efficiently. After evaluating the above limitations, the institute has decided to replace their current manual system to an automated system with the fullest assistance of computer technology for their administrative processes. The proposed solution covers overall administrative processes of IHRA such as student attendance handling, online student applications, student admission handling, data validations, selection of candidates, final results via email/SMS notifications, examination marks and grade records handling. To build the system, adapted MVC architecture and object oriented techniques, PHP as the server-side scripting language and Apache server as the web server. MySQL relational database management system, Net Beans IDE. UML used for analysis and design System can be used with any currently available browser under Microsoft windows XP or upwards operating systems. The proposed system would enable the institute to provide a continued, efficient process that can be used comfortably, while abandoning the weakness of the current conventional system.
