Issue Date: 16-May-2015
Abstract: In the modern business world, the vehicle hiring is a typical business as this world is now converting into the global world with very busy schedules. So other than using their own vehicle, most of the people hire a vehicle for the special occasions as well as for their day to day works. Vasi Quick Cabs is a Sri Lanka Tourist Board approved transport provider which is recognized by the Automobile Association (AA Ceylon) of Sri Lanka. The main business process of the client is successfully committed reservations for the customers. So the duplication of same reservation is the main problem they have faced due to their book keeping procedure. Not only that, unable to get reservations from all the customers due to local telephone network problems, ineligibility of reservation as a result of immediate form filling and general human oversights lead them to limit their service. All the calculations are done by using basic spreadsheet applications by using different functions without a defined method or proper security. So the web based system could be an aid to them to manage their workload efficiently and effectively by closing the loopholes of their quotidian procedure. The online reservation functionality has enhanced their business process over competitors. Not only that, the system has reduced time and the manual effort required in checking the availability of the required vehicle and relevant driver on time. And also it has provided a way to manage all the official documents while generating printable reports. The system has been developed according to the Rational Unified Process (RUP) model which patronages object oriented development. It has been used PHP (Hypertext Pre-processor) for server side scripting along with the WampServer and MySQL for database handling while PDO (PHP Data Objects) has been used for database connectivity. PHP has been used for server side validations and JavaScript with HTML5 for client side validations. As this is a real time scenario, it has been designed to cover all the necessary requirements of the client with regard to the future enhancements. It should be mentioned that, it has achieved all the anticipated benefits for the client through the web based system.
