Abstract: The University of Peradeniya is one of the most famous universities in Sri Lanka, especially for the field of Chemistry. There, the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science has a thriving research community who have excelled and won numerous national and international awards and highly competitive research grants. Hence, one of the major points to this success is its well equipped laboratories with state of the art scientific equipments. Managing such a complex system is the major challenge faced by the Department of Chemistry. Since most of the laboratory base processes are still doing manually, they have taken a wise decision to make a web based computerized system which will support them to do their transaction more effectively and efficiently. The developed system has automated most of the services provided by Chemistry laboratories in the Department of Chemistry to enhance the efficiency by providing a simple, user friendly environment which also eases normal activities. Hence searching and accessing like most of the difficult and time wasting processes of the existing system can be done very easily and in a time saving manner. Here the design and development parts mainly focused on the object oriented methodologies and Rational Unified Process model was used as the system development life cycle. As main development languages PHP, MySQL, HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, JQery, etc were used and Adobe Dreamweaver CC, XAMMP Server, Software Ideas Modeler, etc like soft-wares were also used for the designing and development processes. Since PHP is a server-side scripting language it was used to build the system while Apache and MySQL were used as the web server and for database handling respectively. Finally, the developed system was properly tested and it was identified as a fully user satisfied system.
