Title: Web-based Student Information System for ICES

Abstract: Institute of Computer and Electronic Studies (ICES) is a newly established educational institute in Matara which serves both vocational and higher studies courses for students. Though this was in action for less than a year the number of students enrolling for the courses has increased over the period because the quality of the courses are very high and also because of the dedicated and experienced lecturing panel. More than 200 students are following courses at this institute at the moment and also more than 10 lecturers have registered at the institute to conduct classes for the above courses. Currently all the administration and other work is carried out manually which creates a lot of problems and inefficiencies. Sometimes the information provided is inaccurate as the records been not updated frequently. Also when the workload increases accurate record keeping is a real tedious process and it will end up giving a lot of difficulties. Thus the management of the ICES decided to implement a computerized system over their present manual system. This includes providing an automated solution for the activities related to students and academic staff. In this project a web-based computerized solution was developed for ICES. It mainly consists of a publicly accessible website which acts as the extranet and the authorized user accessible intranet which mainly includes the forms and interfaces to carry out the daily functions such as online student registration and payments, time table scheduling & viewing, lecture attendance and payments and students results handling. A clear statement of the requirements was obtained from the relevant authorities and system which conforms to the requirements and which is best optimized to effectively influence the process to increase the efficiency, while maintaining the integrity of processes according to the rules and regulations of the Institute was developed. The software used for the development are, PHP Hypertext Pre-processor, which is a powerful server-side scripting language, and Apache as the web server. MySQL was used as the Database Management System. The system implemented covers 100% of the user requirements. It has reduced the workload of each user and also has made their daily routines much convenient than before.
