Title: Portal for Donors to Donate to Charities
Authors: Warnakulasuriya, C.D.
Issue Date: 30-Oct-2014
Abstract: Problem faced by the charities is it is becoming harder and harder to find people who would like to donate to the people who are in need. Mainly due to the fact that donors don’t have the time to prepare for it not because they can’t afford the money for donations. Furthermore when the people want to donate they are more concerned about the integrity of the charitable organization so that they won’t donate their money to a scam. The objective is achieved by minimizing the gap between charities and the donors by having where donors will be able to look into several care homes with the photos, how to contact them personally, authenticity of the charity, which dates are available for the donations to be received in the form of meals, updates on an events, information on how to make a donation or via visiting personally. In order to do this charitable contribution should be implanted in the people’s mindset as a normal day to day task. Developing the portal which can also accommodate a concept such as adopting a child or a adopting an elderly person where the adoption party will take care of the child or the elderly person for a given amount of time by providing monetary support for all the basic needs such as meals, cloths, medicine etc was also considered. On research into variables such as factors affecting the donations and what factors motivating the donations also with the busy schedule people have these days it could be seen that the solution should be best achieved via reaching the donors via the internet. The objective is achieved by bringing up several charities closer together in to one convenient location as a web based portal with all the above facilities. The solution should be accessible to everyone who wishes to donate locally or internationally. The solution is more focused on keeping in touch with the donors while making the one off donations a habit. Joomla was chosen after researching on what would be most suitable for the web portal which is open source with many free extensions. It can be said that the web portal was a success where as a prototype 4 charity homes were hosted under one portal after facing many challenges on the way but gaining lot of learning and experience. In the future the web portal is expected to have automated paypal validations and also including many more charity homes.
