Title: Web based Widows & Orphans Pensions (W&OP) Management System For The Department of Pensions

Abstract: Department of Pensions of the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs is one of the major government organization in Sri Lanka who fulfils the government's responsibility towards the senior citizens and to secure an honourable place for them. There are over 4, 76000 pensioners and annually Rs.108 billions are spent for payment of pensions. Widows and Orphans Pension (W&OP) branch is the largest branch in Department of Pensions and it can be considered as the heart of the Department. After death of the pensioner, their family members survive from this Widows and Orphans Pension. This branch is still not automated and all the processes are done manually. This system is built to overcome some problems in the current manual system such as data redundancy, data inaccuracy, data duplication, effort and space consuming and delay in decision making process due to the unavailability of timely reports. This proposed W&OP Management system covers the overall administration process of the W&OP branch such as W&OP registration and issuing new W&OP numbers, W&OP payment calculation, calculation of refund contribution, generate timely reports which are utilized for decision making process etc. The department can monitor their activities from anywhere in the country and the system provides an interactive way to communicate with employees of the divisional secretariats as well. The developed system follows Object Oriented Design (OOD) and Rational Unified Process (RUP) as design methodologies and used Hypertext Pre-Processor (PHP) which is a server-side scripting language as a main language and HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery as additional languages. UML is used in visual modelling. Apache has been used as the web server and MySQL is used to handle data bases. This web based system can be operated either in Windows or Linux environment. Further, Object Oriented testing was done since the system is following Object Oriented methodologies and testing procedures such as unit testing, integration testing, system testing etc are used. At the end of this project client satisfied W&OP Management System has been successfully developed and offer to the client to serve customers more efficiently and effectively.
