Abstract: Maha Sri/Dharmaloka Maha Pirivena is a leading school for samanera bhikkus in SriLanka which mainly provides primary and secondary education for bhikkus up to the Royal Pandith Degree. Currently there are over one hundred twenty students and fourteen teachers in the Pirivena. Pirivena students are from all over SriLanka and some students are from other countries. Custodians of these students have to write letters or have to take telephone calls to obtain details. Students? information, Teachers? information are kept in various files. Staff goes through many files to get information. Teachers? attendance and students? attendance are recorded in books manually. Attendance reports are made by referring those books. Students? term test marks are also stored in a book. Staff wastes a lot of time to make reports and to find information. Pirivena library was maintained by write everything in books. Currently it has been closed by the director of the pirivena. In vacation periods teachers? can not keep in touch with their students for longer times. Principal and the custodians do not have an effective way to communicate with each other. There is not an effective way to get students? information in a given time. Teachers? attendance reports and students? attendance reports must be prepared for every month, for every term and at the end of every year. That is a time consuming process. Library was closed due to inaccuracy and inefficiency of information. Stand alone system is enough for manage attendance and library. A web based system should be there to handle the separation of students and teachers for longer period of times and to handle the inefficiency of communication between custodians and pirivena. Therefore web based school management system is the best answer to address all issues. RAD approach was used to develop the system. Object Oriented Analysis and Design was used as the project methodology. PHP was the main programming language alone with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Jquery. MySQL was the database used. Wamp server was used as the main testing tool. At the end of the project a web based School Management System was implemented and installed successfully in the client computer.
