Abstract: Nuwanesa is a medium scale book shop situated in Battaramulla, a fast developing commercial area. There are some other book shops also situated in Battaramulla and competition between these book shops has increased recently. When attempting to gain the competitive advantage of business, management of the Nuwanesa faced lots of difficulties. They preformed day-to-day business process manually and because of the manual system, there were problems like time consuming, highly labour intensive, lack of efficiency and inability to make quick management decisions. To overcome above difficulties, management of the Nuwanesa has decided to collaborate with new technology. As a beginning, this Book Shop Management System developed to computerize the operations related to Nuwanesa book shop. Considering requirements, main goal of the project was to design and implement a Web Based Book Shop Management System for Nuwanesa book shop. Transactions related to purchase and sales, inventory management, suppliers and customers details handling, database backup and reports generation are covered by this system. Also, this system provides facility to connect with customers and suppliers by emails. To develop the proposed system, RUP (Rational Unified Process) methodology selected as the process model and object oriented concept used to design the system. Industry standard UML (Unified Modeling Language) used to create visual models of object oriented concept. This System was developed using PHP (Hypertext pre- processor), which is a powerful scripting language and used MySQL for database management. Apache used as the web server. Developed system was thoroughly tested and successfully deployed at the Nuwanesa book shop and this Book Shop Management System could help increase the efficiency and smooth running of the business to achieve their business goals.
