Library Management System for Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera Memorial Public Library

Abstract

Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera Memorial Public Library currently has a manual system, which is very inefficient. Since this is the main public library in Panadura, it has a large amount of members. So handling such population manually is harder, which requires more time and more employees. Out of the main activities of the library search books consumes large amount of time and sometimes members get to know that book is not available in the library after searching whole. Also lots of paperwork involves in record keeping. Manual system sometimes has errors and omissions in specifying the working days and holidays which leads to erroneous fine calculation. Therefore the need of computerized system is emerging. The proposed computerized system effectively enhances most of the processes in the library. Time spent, which is the most critical factor in a manual system is considerably decreased. Use of database reduces the amount of paperwork and reduces the repetitive tasks in greater extent. Members can check the availability of books and the exact locations where they have stored in within a very short period of time. Visual Studio 2010 as IDE and Microsoft SQL server 2008 as database server are used for this system. Object oriented approach is used in designing. Some of the object model in UML such as use case diagram, class diagram, activity diagram and etc. are designed under system design process. The library management system has designed to overcome the difficulties face with the manual system. This will allow members do their task efficiently and reduce the huge amount of the daily work of librarians.
