Abstract: The Faculty of Arts of University of Peradeniya is one of the largest faculties in the university system in Sri Lanka which consists of 17 departments with a sub department of English (ELTU). There are about 1,000 students are registered as new comers annually. As the various academic disciplines such as General, Special, Management, BBA and Law degrees with a lot of subject combinations are there in the faculty it was noticed that the staff of the Dean?s office usually face a lot of inconveniences while enrolling the students for the courses. Having considered the above facts it was decided to develop a web based student information system to overcome the problems taken place using the existing manual system. In addition to that it is expected to reduce the time and moral power wasted by following manual procedure and increase the efficiency of the activities after developing the proposed system. The system was developed according to the object oriented techniques and Unified Modeling Language (UML) was employed in the analysis and design phases of the project. In addition, PHP was used as the server side scripting language along with the Apache web server and MySQL was used as the Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) to handle the databases. And also the Waterfall model was applied here as a Software Development Life Cycle model (SDLC) to be developed the system in a proper manner. The web based student information system has been developed in accordance with the user requirements to be functioned smoothly with the user friendly environment. Hence, the user will be received benefits of the system.
