Authors: Sirimevan, S.D.D.N.
Issue Date: 2-Jun-2014
Abstract: The Department of National Zoological Gardens (DNZG) Sri Lanka is a renowned government department which is well known throughout the world for its activities. Thus a dynamic information management and communication solution was needed to replace their static websites [WWW 1] and manual information management and communication system. DNZG currently consists of three major sections, namely the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens and the Department. There are also two ongoing constructions, one at Pinnawala Zoo and the other being the Hambanthota Safari Park. The ZWIMS contains two major components, front-end as a communication tool and back-end as a management tool. It is designed to deal with all five sections as a large scale ongoing project with five stages. In this endeavour as stage one, ZWIMS front-end structures for the Pinnawala Orphanage, the Dehiwala Zoo and for the Department are designed. The back-end management tool is developed and integrated with Pinnawala Orphanage front-end structure. ZWIMS will solve the problems of the existing system such as, less interactivity, developer and development time dependency, outdating of information, less reliability, inefficiency etc. It will make the visitor-department relationship stronger while satisfying internal information management requirements. This solution is based on client server architecture and developed according to object oriented principles. Thus it can be easily adapted for future changes. The system is modelled using Unified Modelling Language. PHP version 5.x and MySQL are used for server side scripting and database technology respectively. AJAX, Java Scripts, XHTML, CSS, Flash and XML are other technologies that are used in development. Functional and non-functional requirements related to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage section is achieved up to a considerable level in stage one of ZWIMS. It also can serve as a general back-end information management and communication tool for the entire department including ongoing and future constructions. Specialization for a particular section can be done with few modifications. ZWIMS version one will be released by adding the language localization feature to stage one. Thus it will address the requirements necessary for Pinnawala.
