Issue Date: 2-Jun-2014
Abstract: Education is one of the most important aspects of life. Various educational institutes provide the primary, secondary and tertiary education that is required for the development of a child. The academic staff members of an educational institute play a very important role in educating young minds. The duties of the academic staff include not only educating students but also handling huge amounts of paper work. Most of their valuable time is spent on keeping records and handling paperwork. The academic staff assistance system is being developed mainly to reduce the paper work required by the academic staff members and thereby increase the efficiency and effectiveness of work. The Academic Staff Assistance System is developed for the School for the Deaf Ratmalana which is an academic institute handling the education of hearing impaired students. The system provides the functionality to easily maintain details of students, staff members and sponsors of students. Using the system staff members would be able to create class schedules and vocational training schedules quickly and record attendance and lesson details more efficiently. The system automates the sponsorship process and also handles the process of leave management of staff members. The system provides reliability of the data stored and necessary security measures are implemented to prevent unauthorized access to the system. To analyze, design, implement, test and document the system, object oriented methodology was used. Unified Modeling Language with the tool Rational Rose was used to model the system. The system, designed to be a web based system was implemented using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 with ASP.NET 3.5. C# was used as the development language. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 was used to implement the relational database. The developed system was tested and accepted by the users. The system can be further expanded by making it suitable to be implemented in any academic institute, so as to reduce the workload of academic staff members, leaving a considerable amount of well deserved extra time on their hands, which can lead to more effective work.
