Authors: Elvitigala, S.N.
Issue Date: 2-Jun-2014
Abstract: Today e-commerce is a multi-million dollar industry with more and more people tend to do their monitory transactions online. Hence persuading merchants to also sell goods & provide services online and accept payments. This in turn means having more and more people capable of connecting to the internet will make a sure boost to the industry. So, what will be the experience when people don t have an internet connection? Will they have to give up e-commerce until a connection is available? This project was developed to address the situations where an internet connection is not available but a person can still shop through the product portfolio of the merchant (Sarasavi bookshop in this instance) and make necessary decisions to add the desired products to a cart. As an added benefits this solution also provide a good alternative to slow page loading experience in a web browser and also cater for the need of distributing the company profile in a more interactive way compared to traditional written documents or PDFs. The system consists of both online and an offline component (also referred to as the client software). Each of which conforms to client server architecture as an abstract view. Online component is a web based system with a front end web site and a simple backend administration area which followed the evolutionary prototyping methodology. Offline component was developed as standalone software in which the user is facilitated to browse the product portfolio and make offline orders and provide other merchant information such as company profile, contact details etc. Once the system is connected online the offline order queue is processed and the sale can be made. The online component was developed with PHP and MySQL technologies. Offline component was developed through FLEX [WWW2, 2010] framework and deployed through ADOBE AIR [WWW1, 2008]. The system was developed after a significant amount of analysis and design. Since the technology used in the project development was new there were last minute changes and lots of room for future expansions. Due to research & development nature of the project several training materials were utilized [Gassner, 2008].
