Abstract: The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo is a well recognized department which has been doing enormous service to our motherland. At present, most of the courses and operations organizing and managing activities have been done manually and according to the situation of the current analysis, department faces difficulties in allocating resources efficiently, maintaining and monitoring and managing student information. Therefore this project will endeavor to improve and maintain the standard information, quality and efficiency of the department. The entire system divides in to two sub systems, namely Student Registration System and Student Information System. This project covered all the functionalities of administration and main sections of managing the student information of the department. There are different user roles and different privileges are assigned to those roles. According to the assigned privileges, users will be able to view pages of the system and perform tasks. Student registering, maintaining department and student information are some of the highlighted areas of the work done. More over relevant reports are provided for the management, using the web based system. Users can acquire course related information easily, while improving the efficiency of the whole system. Relevant reports are provided for all the users according to their privileges. The system was developed according to the three-tier architecture and also Object Oriented techniques were employed. Unified Modeling Language was used in the analysis and design stages of the project. Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 was used to implement the system in PHP language with the help of Apache Web Server. MySQL version 5 was used as the database server in Windows environment. This dissertation illustrates all the work carried out during the each phase of the project. Each chapter will consist of required details in order to understand the project with the help of appropriate figures, graphs and reports. Functional and non-functional objectives were also achieved. Therefore this system gives a smooth functioning procedure with a user friendly environment. This system will help the department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, to manage their department and student information efficiently to provide a better service to the community in Sri Lanka.
