Automated Device Management System for Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd.

Abstract

Device Management System of a mobile communication operator is a system where the operator has the ability to configure the customer devices (Mobile phones, PDAs etc.) remotely. Currently Mobitel (Pvt.) Ltd has a Device Management System. But there are several shortcomings of this system. So Mobitel (Pvt.) Ltd is looking forward for a prompt replacement for the existing system. The main requirement was a system which can work more stable than the existing system. The newly developed system has the capability of configuring more than 80% of Mobitel customer devices remotely. It could configure devices in three ways; ? automatically, once a SIM is entered to a new mobile by a customer ? by customer initiated requests and, ? by customer care agent initiated requests. Newly developed Device Management System is a scalable system. It is equipped with features of updating the system for newly released models. System administrators are provided interfaces to easily update the system for everyday releasing new models and day today customer demands. They are also provided features to generate reports easily regarding the System Health, System traffic utilizations etc. As a whole the new system is an easy to use, scalable and a easily maintainable one. The core of the system, the setting sending engine was developed using JAVA. A stand alone java console program handles this setting sending part. There are interfaces to take customer requests to our system. Those were also developed using JAVA. All the databases to store setting profiles, customer data etc. were done using MySQL databases. The web interfaces were developed using JDeveloper and it was deployed to a Weblogic Web Server.
