Authors: Bandara, M.A.T.P.
Issue Date: 2-Jun-2014
Abstract: Infotechs International Private Limited is a well organized software company which provides mobile Internet solutions & VAS to Sri Lanka s leading mobile operators including Dialog, Mobitel & Etisalat. Infotechs International provides most popular WAP portals, commercial websites and VAS through SMS. Infotechs International s main Server (Streaming Server) is situated at the SLT-iDC for the unlimited connectivity, high speed internet bandwidth, both physical & logical security. The Streaming server can only be accessed from Infotechs International s office with the static public IP address for the security reasons. All the mobile operators are connected to the Infotechs International s server through VPN Connections. Infotechs International s applications are bind with the operator s billing servers, SMS services, data sources & etc. The Streaming sever fails time to time due to errors in critical services. There is no proper monitoring system to monitor the streaming server. The company s staff is checking the critical services time to time by log in to the Streaming server from the office. Even in holidays the staff is remotely connecting to the office & monitors the Streaming server from time to time. The requirement is to implement a new system to monitor & alert the Infotechs International staff in a failure of the critical services that runs on the streaming server. The new solution should be installed in the streaming server & it must be compatible with the current Operating system, existing open source application programs and must use minimum installation of new software. According to the requirement, the new system is based on the existing software; Fedora 7, Java, MySQL, shell script & jsp and new software Kannel. Web methodology as well as standalone application system was used with the shell scripting. Most critical requirement of this project was to check the VPN status & I have done a research to find a method to check the VPN status & finally found a component check_tcp which is fulfilling the requirement. This dissertation illustrates all the work carried out during each phase of the project. Each chapter consists of required details in order to understand the project with the help of appropriate figures, graphs and reports. The new systems ensures the minimum server down time via monitoring the critical services in every 10min & alert the staff in failure of any critical service via SMS. Infotechs International has tested the software in a testing server for a period of one month & Implemented the system in the streaming server. I strongly believe that the new system fulfill all the requirements of Infotechs International & gain benefit to Infotechs International.
