National Development Bank PLC (NDB Bank) is a private commercial bank which is part of the NDB Group. The Management of NDB Bank strongly believes that its people are one of the very important factors of the success of the Bank. Hence, the Bank always ensures it employees and retains the best in their respective fields, provides them with the skills and empowers them to serve the Banks customers with dedication and passion. With the aim of enhancing the knowledge base of its employees, NDB Bank opened a Library in at its Head Office building to facilitate employees to enrich their knowledge in banking and finance. Since the inception of the library, traditional library functions such as book lending and borrowings are managed through a system that is known as CDS/ISIS. This system, which was given to most of the libraries in Sri Lanka by UNESCO, was developed with the intention of matching the requirements of any general library in the latter part of last decade. With the transformation of the main business strategy of the Bank, and the shift from development banking to retail banking, NDB Bank started growing rapidly. With this transformation, recruitments are taking place rapidly; and at the time of writing this dissertation it is passed the employee count of 1000. All these staff members are currently being employed all over the island attached to various branches and departments. With this significant change in the structure of the Bank, the library facility is now limited only to 30% of the Banks employees, who are at the Head Office building. The main objective of developing the browser based library system is to spread the library facility to as many employees as possible at the bank. The new system also aims to standardize the general library operations which are not currently being handled by the existing system. The new system will also create a virtual library for the employees who do not have access to the Library due to geographical distance. The virtual library is now a primary requirement which is highlighted by the Bank. The module allows inquiry services, such as checking the availability of books, placing a reservation for a book in lending library, etc. In addition to this, the system will ensure iv smooth day to day operations of the Library. The approach which is described below, attempts is to fulfill the Banks requirement as well as fulfill a partial requirement of BIT Degree program.en_US
