Abstract: Information Technology has already changed the way people think and feel about each other. Most of the countries have realized that their government expenditure can be cut drastically with the help of Information and Communication Technology. Health Care Sector is one of the main sectors of a government where a proper health care information system is vital. When it comes to the Sri Lankan health care system, involvement of the Information Technology is still limited to the private sector. In a typical ward of a government hospital the main area where an IT solution is required is drugs management. This is something where Nurses spend days just to get the drug stock balanced. In the indoor drug dispensary, they face the problem of issuing and managing drugs to the whole hospital. In some wards, some drugs are expired and for some, they cannot find enough to fulfil their drugs requirement. That is why a proper drug stock controlling has become very important. Another area where, IT solution is required is staff allocation of nurses. When peoples are involved in staff allocation lots of disputes and problems arise due to unfairness and invisibility of some moves. So, for duty arrangements, some fair system is required. The Ward Management System is built for the Mental Hospital, Angoda. This system has been built using the client server architecture. There is a database server serving as the central repository for all kinds of global information. Each ward has its own client program connected with the central server. For the office and indoor dispensary there are separate client programs running. In the ward?s program there are several windows offering functionalities for mainly Drug management and Nurses duty arrangement, Patient information querying, client listing, basic add, delete, and update functionalities are some other functions that the system offers. The Ward Management System is built upon Microsoft.NET framework using Visual Studio 2005. Used language is C#.NET. Central repository is handled mainly by the Microsoft SQL server 2005. The platform used in this project is windows Vista Home Premium. The report is the summary of the work done throughout the project and it gives the hints for further development of this work in the future.
