WEB BASED INTERACTIVE INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR INSTITUTE OF SURVEYING AND MAPPING, DIYATALAWA

Abstract

A Web Based Interactive Information Management System (WBIIMS) for the Institute of Surveying and Mapping (ISM) is developed in this project. ISM at Diyatalawa is the oldest institute in Sri Lanka for training surveyors. The institute requires WBIIMS to be the official representative in the World Wide Web. The web system will be the information hub to the general public. Information about academic courses, examinations, continuous professional development programs are some of the academic services that will be enabled through the web system. News and other relevant information are also published in this system. WBIIMS is equipped with an online circuit bungalow reservation system in order to increase the efficiency of the existing manual reservation system. The system provides facility to maintain an electronic database of accredited surveyors in Sri Lanka with collaboration of Surveyors Institute of Sri Lanka (SISL). This database enables general public to search a surveyor according to various search criterions such as locality, name, registration number etc. WBIIMS uses open source technologies such as PHP, mysql and javascript for the system development. The system can be operated either in a windows or Linux based environment. The web system is successfully developed and tested for using in the real environment. The other motivation behind this project is that it serves as a part of academic requirement of external degree program Bachelor of Information Technology conducted by University of Colombo, School of Computing.
