Title: Web Based Network Monitoring System for Sri Palee Campus
Authors: Hettiarachchi, N.R.
Issue Date: 20-May-2014
Abstract: As computer networks grow in size, both physically and geographically day by day, more scalable solutions for network administration are becoming necessary to monitor bandwidth usage, report and resolve network failures and analysing user activity. The proper solution may support system administrators to make decisions for their future expansions, preventing system failures and maintaining efficient internet band width. The project Sri Palee Campus Network Monitoring System (SPC-NMS) is a study on selected tools to test the network performance and user activity monitoring the uses of PHP/MySQL and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) implementation. It also monitors and records the internet and PC activities of the users through simple LAN environment on both Windows operating and Linux operating system. The functional task includes accessing various information of arbitrary systems within a network from one's current environment. SPC-NMS can be used to monitor network traffic of each Network Interface Card (NIC) of any workstation which supports SNMP communication. SPC-NMS saves the traffic information from the monitored device by logging into log file and optionally to the database. The general information of a network such as network traffic, bandwidth, and status of any system, i.e., connected or not connected to the network, can be observed. Finally, SPC-NMS will include some of the special features that will help the system administrators and top level management to cope with monitor computer activity and internet data usage. It will help administrators to make decisions for future enlargement of bandwidth and prevent failures through track visited website, active time, inactive time, used data bytes and many more. Hence this software will be able to monitor user activities in university, school, private sector and many different environments.
