Title: GPS Based Tracking Tool for Tourism Industry
Authors: Wickramanayake, B.H.
Issue Date:  12
Abstract: This thesis introduces an analysis tool that can be used in behavioral analysis of tourists. The focus was on developing a portable tool which can easily be used by tourists for gathering geographical information required for the analysis. The uses of wireless data transmission techniques for logging data, minimizes the burden of data collection, which in turn make it popular among the tourists. The added features such as the ability to view the route travelled further enhance its popularity. The fundamental concepts and methodologies of using mobile communication instruments for tracking survey for individual travel behaviour, proposed in the thesis were tested and evaluated in order to prove its credibility in the use as a viable tool in the analysis. In particular, the characteristics of the tracking method using mobile phones are discussed. In addition few other testing scenarios were used to test the robustness of the application. The accuracy of the location positioning is found satisfactory for describing tourist travel behaviour. The sample tracking scenario has proved that the survey system would be available for on-line monitoring of a number of travellers due to its GPRS based data logging functionality. It is concluded that the proposed system could be added into most hand held devices since the implementation is done in J2ME.
