Student Management System for RnB IT Institute

Abstract

The student management system has been developed as a web-based solution to facilitate the client to manage the business transactions in an efficient environment establishing enhanced communication and collaboration among students, parents and lecturers whilst providing access to critical information timely and securely on meeting strategic level needs. The system is capable of managing student details, lecturer details, course details, class schedules, practical booking schedules, examination schedules, payment details, distribution of course materials, user management and reports analysis. Additionally, conducting online assessments, assignments, practice quizzes, examinations, forums, polls and articles enhances student interactions through information sharing, communication and collaboration among the community without limiting to the class room concept. The Extreme Prototyping has been adopted as the methodology in designing and implementation approach since the intended system was a web based solution. The FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) standards with the latest technologies such as PHP, JavaScript, AJAX, JQuery, JQModal and XML have been used with MySQL Database Management System (DBMS) as the back-end. The system has shown impact in management and supporting the decision making directly, creating a competitive advantage towards achieving strategic needs of the client. By applying knowledge acquired and the concepts learnt throughout the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) course together with the Free and Open Source (FOSS) technologies available in the industry, the efforts made to engineer this software product undoubtedly proves, a solution provided to a real-world problem through practical exposure.
