Web Based Student Information System For University of Colombo Faculty of Education

Abstract

This project addresses most critical problems related to the student information management in the University of Colombo Faculty of Education. Implementation of this project offers accurate, efficient information access to all the parties involved with the Faculty of Education than traditional paper base system. Further more this will eliminate the reworking on same task by different personals at different levels and provide required information independent of human involvement, which make most of the functions more efficient. Therefore this will save huge amount of human hours that can be utilized for other tasks. Also computerization of data provides comfortable means of data archive. Student Information System (SIS) is an integrated application & it is a data warehouse of student?s information which is completely web based & operates through Internet or LAN. SIS manages the student information by accepting, adding, modifying or removing information & generating reports. This web based Management Information System was developed based Client Server Architecture and using Object Oriented Concepts. PHP: Hypertext Pre-processor, which is a powerful server side scripting language, was used as the programming language and Apache as the web server. MySQL was used as the Database Management System. This combination ensures a high portability to the system developed. This developed system is thoroughly to guarantee a validated system. The proposed Student Information System was tested according to a system test plan. Test plan identifies all testing related activities that need to be performed along with the schedule. Accordingly, SIS will be a total solution for the client to achieve its goals and objectives by managing Information strategically and accurately.
